One interesting thing I discovered about Pilates is that our breath can actually help us to perform certain movements or activate certain muscles. Try this simple exercise.
Lie on your back with arms on the side and straighten your legs, maintaining a neutral pelvis. Try lifting up your legs straight at a 90 degree angle. This simple movement can be hard for first timers. Make sure that you upper body and head are still on the ground when you lift up your legs. Now, do this again. This time, take a deep breath with your nose, making sure you expand your lungs sideways. Breathe out with pursed lips (hissing sound), making sure that your ribs aren’t popping up. As you start breathe out with your mouth, lift your legs again, using your abs. You should find the movement easier this time.
I’m off to my group studio class tomorrow. Since hubby is out of town, I’ll be shopping in the mall of a new kitchen sink for the house. Sometimes, it’s nice to have my own personal space and ‘me’ time. Every couple needs a break from each other!
